So, I've had this nagging suspicion that Adult, one of my favorite groups has totally lost the fuckin' plot.

Those first two albums were brilliant, cause you could mix them with anything, and were super angular and fucked up, but with crazy ass hooks. When the EP came out, I was concerned about my lack of enthusiasm, and their lack of musicality. But of course, everyone else thought it was great, lol.

Anyhow, I caught 'em live in Toronto for the...fourth time, I think I've seen them. So I've got a frame of reference. I think they were mad, because attendance was low, the sound was not good, their light show didn't work, and well, it was just bad.

The addition of a third member on guitars does nothing. They're using a Moog Voyager but it seemed to be little more than a prop. I used to enjoy Nicola's pointy vocals, but it seems that at the show, it was more of an assault of words with nothing being said. It literally, hurt my ears. The set (before we left) comprised of mostly new stuff, which as I said, is just difficult for the sake of being difficult.

Also, the opening group were probably the worst thing I've ever seen. A couple of junkies with a beatbox pretending to be T-Rex (I know, wrap your heads around that one)

Ohhh, Adult. I hope this is just a phase.....

If you're right about this, it's a damn shame, although not a massive fan of adult, I've always enjoyed their music and have been intending to pick up their new releases, now you've got me thinking I shouldn't bother!

Hell no, far from it. And don't let me be the final word on it, lol. These are just observations from a long time fan. Believe me, I'd be bummed out if they kept making the same records over and over again. I'd never begrudge a band's right to experiment. I just get the feeling that with DUME...they wanted to get into this post punk anti music scene with beatboxes and guitars because...well...to be extra arty, lol.

Like I said, their earlier music was to most people, already abrasive. I loved that. I also loved that kernel of catchiness that was buried in that abrasiveness. That was their magic. Now it's just...all really harsh. Couple that with a surly mood and you've got yourself a not so much fun show.

Nicolas vocals are not for everyone, and I always loved her lyrics..at the show it was like...an onslaught, though.

I dunno, check it out, I'm curious to know what other longtime fans are feeling. I know my trusty buddy, who attended the show with me, felt the same. It made me sad. I hate to hate, lol.

That;s ADULT. They always have been arty. Ever see the record jacket for i think it's the AUto Motif record? By Le Car actually, but they lined up a bunch of white jackets and drove a car through ink, then ran oover the jackets with one car tire. Pretty arty to me =o]

Yeah, I remember that le car cover. I think the Count called it "LeLazy" when he saw it, lol....ahhh, the Count, he's a funny guy.

Arty for the sake of arty...it's true. But like I said, the first two albums, goddamn it, they were arty and difficult (to most) but to me, it was some fucking catchy shit. Now...there is no catchy shit. Whatsoever. Just...pretention. And I hate that.

For me, it's a personal thing, ya know. Cause the verrry first time I saw them (ages ago) we were just beginning to assemble our live pa and seeing adult gave us a lot of confidence...it was like..."yeah, we CAN do this...see, THEY'RE doing it". So I've got a soft spot in my heart for them...which is what makes this even more hard for me.

Also, I've seen them be fucking amazing. When they played here with Magas during the SARS epidemic, it was fucked up awesome. Sweaty paranoid bodies mashing into one another...it was great.

Now Magas, I love dearly. I kept wailing at the show last week "whhyyy isn't MAGAS hereeeeeeee to save the day" lol.

What is up with Magas? Where's he at?

    angular without reason.

I liked the last add N to X album. Ann Shenton's left the band though, and her stuff is pretty fuckin' out there.

You're fucking right he's great. He's like the fat sweaty vegas Elvis of angular electroclash/nowave, lol. I, personally, think that's very hot. I also like that he didn't get swept up in all that electroclash nonsense, it makes me respect him even more.
