So I went and checked out this local WRX for sale. It's an 02 bugeye, anyway after driving it a bit there was occasionally a very faint burnt oil smell. The guy says he thinks the exhaust manifold is burning up loose or dripping oil, and that was my initial thought as well.

Is this a common problem with these cars, is it a big thing or something small like an isolated leak thats burning up on the manifold?? He claims he hasn't lost any noticeable amount of oil and I didn't find any on the ground neither.

did it smoke at all? he could be burning oil over the exhaust, or in the turbo, or from a valve, or......

it's a toss up on. Half the legacies all years burn synthetic faster and half burn dino faster. Mine would eat the dino quicker but my same color same year buddy was opposite. New crush washer every time and IC was fairly clean. Same with the faulty pickup tube failures. What year did subaru have that damn banjo bolt filter or was it all turbos?

Seems like it is a problem for all of the turbos, the little screen gets clogged. I guess it's supposed to be cleaned at every oil change to prevent clogging? :o

Depending on the forum it's a mixed answer. Some say gut the screen. Some say 3 oil changes just buy another one. Some say carb spray it and call it a day. Some say fuck it, if it blows it was time for a vf43 swap anyways. Subaru said 3k oil changes. I seen them and the vf40's go for like $300 on the forums but I hate subi turbo instals. That bottom oil line is a bitch.

There was nothing that I could see on or around the head, or what ever you would call it on that sideways ass engine. The bay looked much drier than my 240s thats for sure.

youre gonna have to crawl under it to get a definate answer. dont be afraid to make sure there is no oil leaks or that the turbo isnt going to shit

How did it pull(vibrate) when you boosted or did he not let you do it?
Did it have a ford 4.6L shake on cold start/idle?
Did he have records of changing oil frequently?
If you asked to let the car bee seen by a shop would he seem like he'd be hesitant to let it?

My uncle works at a Ford/Subaru dealer and I brought it over there for a few guys to look at it. Of course they're so incompetent they didn't realize it before me. Nothing unusual when I got on it, it handled like a dream and it had some front end work done to it before from a small wreck, but it nothing seemed wrong.
