Right now I'm working on my sophomore year at a Cal State University-and I'm having issues with it. I wish I'd waited maybe a year right before jumping into it, but my family's expectations exceeded my own, which pressured me a lot. So I don't feel I'm excelling at my best-because I'd rather be out and about.
I've honestly been thinking about joining the Army or Air Force... then going back to school when I'm ready.
With that said I'd like blunt opinions from a woman's point of view (nothing sugar coated) on what it's like to go through boot camp, and what to expect being in the military-and what happens when you get out. Er... men's opinions are appreciated as well-but I think it's safe to say that a woman's perspective helps a lot more. In general no one really knows what it's like to experience something until you actually do-I know that. I think what I'm expecting out of it is to have a better sense of self discipline and direction of where I really want to be...
If you're going to say something blatantly offensive, I'm not going to reply. Everyone is definitely entitled to their own opinion, but this isn't about whether or not you agree with the military. I appreciate stories about people who made a similar decision and what happened thereafter. But if you don't even know what it's like to be in those shoes-I'd rather you ignore this post. Message me if you feel more comfortable not making a public post.
Thanks!

The majority of people that I've talked about the military with, and do NOT want to join, also tell me that they have issues with authority. Which you know, is obviously fine-to each their own lol. I think that temporary kick in the ass though forms some amount of self discipline for plenty. Of course, you don't have to join the military to gain that quality.

OFFICER! For god's sake officer! I've heard too many bad stories about women in the military. You go into the armed forces, you want those stripes.

Don't you have to have a Bachelor's Degree before trying to become an officer? I read that somewhere, can't remember where. I don't really have the patience to wait if that is the case. I'm into my sophomore year where I go to school. I've heard really bad stories as well. But I've also heard stories from other women who haven't had anything happen to them. I assume the ones who have been through shit aren't smart about who they're around. Much like plenty of college girls.

Hey, i was actually in a similar situation as yours. I am currently in the Air Force but before that i was a college student, i went through 3 years of college but felt like i wasnt doing anything w/ my life. I think i made a very good decision about the military. When it comes to basic training, it is the same for both men and women, yes it sucks but you have to train your mind to take the physical and mental abuse, 8 weeks go by pretty quick when u lose track of time. Any ways, now that im in the military i still have time to finish my degree in psychology, and im currently in the process of becoming an officer after i earn my degree. Oh and since you're a sophomore in college, you'll more than likely graduate basic training w/ the pay grade of E-3 in other words youll earn as much as someone that has done their first 3 years in w/ out having to be in for that long. Oh and keep in mind that you can deploy at any time, (im currently in Iraq) but its extra money. well if u have any questions feel free to ask

yes, they also will tell you that a minimum GPA of 2.5 is required, but I know some that got around that... There are no stripes by the way, as someone mentioned earlier

sohoryan: mod edit*Trolling is not tolerated here, do it again and you're banned*.
It's a shame that there is always one Negative person out there ready to leap out like a TROLL and try to destroy someones dreams. You are a TROLL. You have NO idea what the US Military is like because YOU are from the UK. What ever you do know is most likely what you HEARD from either the media or some half pipe crack head in a RAVE located in LONDON. Do the young a lady a favor. Don't post on her thread if you have nothing positive to add or from Experience. To the OP. It's great that you want answers. Your best bet is to get it straight from the source and NOT from people who have never been in, or do NOT live in the Country. You might also want to check out www.military.com Hit the discussion boards there. You can get straight cut answers from all 5 branches. In regards to the ARMY, for a female from a males point of view, Basic can be somewhat easy or tough. Depends on your physical abilities. Are you physically active, do you go to the gym a lot, do you run etc etc. The Army isn't anything like the Air Force or Navy. The two toughest branches are the Marines and the Army when it comes to working outside and deployments. Keep in mind...ALL BRANCHES DEPLOY. Do not let anyone tell you differently. What you do in the military is what you get out of it. If you go into it with negative attitude, it will catch up to you quickly and you will hate it. If you tackle all your tasks, conditions, and standards with a positive attitude, then you will succeed in promotions, and assignements. Good luck in your endeavors.

a horse of course: don't get molested by over eager Officers.
It's the NCOs who are the offenders in that area. A bunch of noncoms that I know from Leonard Wood just got into a shitstorm for it.
