As a movie, it was okay, it had the requisite action pieces and the dramatic moments and what Spidey movie is complete without someone somehow someway being forced to plummet from a very tall building to be rescued 'just in the nick of time" by Spiderman....throw in a few massive punchouts (all faster, more brutal, and significantly longer than the last two films) and voila.....

better than Fantasic Four (albeit no Jessica Alba) and not as good as X-men 3 (and not as riveting as HEROES 20)

but on to the plot holes....

the first thing anyone learns in writing a script is to build into the story the motivation and the why, that nothing is left to chance, fate, rolling of the dice, its not random....and in Spiderman 3, there were several random moments that made me ask "Wait a seond....why did that happen?"

number one being the crane scene

I wonder if the trend is just to dumb down all the superhero stories for modern audiences because it keeps repeating...over and over....taking the dark complexity of a story and distilling it to guys in latex beating up other guys in latex..

Well, I'm glad you on the whole liked the film. I get to see it tomorrow at the ICG monthly screening (yes, 4.5 hours early). Bill Pope ASC wil be there as well, and will answer questions. I'll be interested to hear what he has to say (in addition to seeing the film itself).

yeah end of the day they delivered a quality spiderman story, so if they ask, say "yeah, Quito liked it"

I'll probably even see it again, they did that good of job with the production and the story (removing any ties to the comic mythology) was solid

I made a decision not to see it after watching the trailer. I see another example of Hollywood milking sequels and insulting audiences with the attitude that if you give them a fight, a chase and a load of effects, who needs plot?

I don't want to support that in the industry, so although I am always curious about what it might be like, I boycott sequels and remakes in general. I did see Spidey 2 and was a bit disappointed. Really liked the first one.

If I were to hear from loads of people that it was really fantastic, I would change my mind. But we need to stop supporting the corporate machine that makes dumbed down films. Make them work for all that money, and not just on effects.

it was also released in Europe 1st.

    why?

bc its a huge bootleg market out there. way bigger than the US

so they figure that if they premier it out there, they will get more sales than if they premier it here 1st and get it ripped off an have it be all over europe and asia that monday morning weeks before it hits theaters out there

I saw it today (the 3rd) at 7:30. The Local600 had a screening and q&a with Bill Pope; lots of fun.

Yeah, there were a couple things that made me just say "wait, what?"

But they were pretty minor things, and it was still a pretty good movie. There was one sequence in particular that was just 110% Raimi. It reminded me of Army of Darkness at times.

    MAYBE SLIGHT SPOILER

A note about midnight screenings: They're awesome. Highest geek concentration on the planet. Normally I want to punch anyone who talks during a movie, but the funniest line of the night came right after the jazz club scene when it got all quiet and the guy sitting next to me somewhat loudly said "At least he didn't force-choke her." The whole theater exploded.

Haha! Pure genius. I just saw it a few hours ago. I liked it and thought it was a fun movie. Lots of great moments, jokes, VFX, and I liked the message even if slightly preachy.

What was up with some of those awkward scenes though? Like his Travoltaesque 70's strut/dance to the music, his dance number in the jazz bar, and his emo alter ego. I thought these were all funny, but just a little too over the top.

I still greatly enjoyed the film though and have a lot of respect for Raimi as a director. Everyone see it now.

    Brian

P.S. Interesting casting choice for Venom, but he should have been bulkier (when he's actually Venom at least).

I thought this movie was the biggest pile of steaming shit I've ever seen...

    I wish i was kidding..

I have been looking forward to this movie since they leaked the teaser poster of Spiderman in the Venom costume. They let me down BIG TIME. Im just going to list the things I found wrong with this movie:

I thought the visual effects sucked.. The Sandman when he was all sand was garbage, when they put his face over his cgi body it looked like shit, When they posted Topher's face over the Venom body it looked really bad too

The acting was awful... I LOVE Tobey Maguire but he took this movie off, he didn't seem to care much, Kirstin Dunst was also pretty bad, she also sucked at singing (was that her real voice?) Bryce Dallas Howard and Topher Grace were great though, (Topher was the only good thing in this movie in my opinion)

What was the deal with Harry Osbourn in this movie? He looked like he was strung out on crack with the way he was talking and then that one scene when MJ calls him and hes painting a picture of a pitcher and some fruit? WHAT THE FUCK?!

The large painting of Norman Osbourn... WHAT THE FUCK?! that looked stupid and goofy

Sam Raimi.. was he trying to turn this action/drama series into a comedy? I mean he had funny moments in the first two but this one was just ridiculous with how he tried to make it funny

Peter Parker with black emo hair and eyeliner? WHY just WHY? The part that made me mad was when he was walking out of the alley looked in the mirror or whatever n then fixed his hair like that and smiled (Sam Raimi trying to be funny?) It just looked dumb

No explanation... where did the black suit come from? The black crap grabbed on to Peter and I was under the impression that it turned his blue/red costume black (inexplicable anyway) but NO he somehow got a whole other costume that he can TAKE OFF, if all that same stuff fell on Topher why couldn't he take his off? Why wasn't it material like Peter's was?

Bernard... he knew ALL ALONG that not only was Norman the Green Goblin, but Spiderman DIDNT kill him, in the 2nd movie he saw Harry obsessing over Spiderman killing his dad but yet decided not to tell him the whole story and thought that the time was right after Harry became the new goblin? come on

What was with the 20 minute montage of Peter walking down the street like the 3rd Butavi brother from Night at the Roxberry?

The Sandman... the sandman's character made NO SENSE, first of all it was a little after 2 in the morning when he stumbled into the experiment (Aunt May's clock read 2:10) WHY WERE THEY DOING THIS @ 2 IN THE MORNING? Also when Spiderman punches him his fist go right through him cuz hes made of sand, however when his fist turn into giant fists made of SAND he can knock over trucks? ummm??

There were THREE things I liked about this movie:

    1. Topher Grace, he was such a badass and it took guts to cast him as Venom, not very conventional but I think it worked

    2. Even though its incredibly inaccurate and kind of dumb, I liked that Harry came back to help Peter in the end, it was soo cool seeing Spiderman fight alongside someone and it was kind of touching seeing them work together for the first time since Spiderman 1 when they were still in highschool and looking out for each other

    3. I liked that he forgave Sandman and he lived. Its refreshing to see them not severe all ties with a character and it had a good message attached to it

Overall it seemed like Sam Raimi didn't care about this at all and I am under the impression that he never had any desire to do a Spiderman 4 so he made this one as bad as possible so nobody would expect one...

I'm still pissed off that James Cameron didn't get to do the films.
