Have you ever asked somebody that got the hiccups whats his middle name, to stop them?

My fiancee told me about it and it worked for her 3 out of 4 times.

I wonder how the specific brain activity and the hiccups connect, if at all.

Hiccups are irregular unvoluntary contractions of the diaphragm. The only effective way I found to get rid of them is to relax, breathe in slowly and regularly, and try to forget about them. The muscle spasms eventually stop and the hiccups are gone.

Scaring people or asking them their middle name or drinking a glass of water upside down (and many other tricks) fall more into the category of old wives tales than actual science... They may or may not work, depending on a variety of factors occuring at the time one tries to get rid of hiccups using those tricks...

The best way, sure fire way to cure hiccups is...

Find a very public place, strip off all your clothes, Have someone wearing a tight leather outfit whip you while you drink a glass of frozen water backwards.

    Try it :p

Kelly you got it all wrong, that's how you cure your phobia of public showers.

Seriously, drink a glass of water through a coffee filter. It forces you to concentrate on your drinking and breathing and cures the hiccups everytime.

PS: I tipped a bartender $20 for that tip, but my advice here is free!

I hold my breath for as long as possible, and it always gets rid of them, every time. I've also told others to do this and it works for them too. Is this just some placebo effect or part of your "breath slowly" idea?

Sounds like a bit of both to me...

I just try to hold my breath for a while. One time I was drunk and couldn't shake the hiccups, so my freind made me eat 2 packets of sugar, and it was gone

My students and I are often plagued with hiccups...surefire way is to drink, but as you swallow, stretch your arms up high. repeat several times.

Most of the crazy cures people come up with seem to work, but I think it all boils down to relaxing your muscles either through concentration or fear.
