My feeling is that he isn't really all that; Carl barat was obviously the talent in the libertines as Pete has managed to produce pretty much next to nothing; I do own the Dirty pretty things album and I like it.

For decades drug abuse and legendary songwriting have gone hand in

hand. That is until pete doherty showed up on the scene. Pete has single

handedly destroyed the dangerous myth and legend that doing a bit of

smack will enable you to create legendary songs that will be remembered for

years. Rock histories famous addicts were infact genuinely amazing song

writers who sadly got caught up in a deadly and dirty past time, the

shit really didn't write the songs for them.



Hopefully young and

impressionable song writers can now feel comfortable and confident creating

their art without having to pretend that they are former smack addicts, as

this does appear to be some sort of sad badge of honour these days. I'm

sure there are somewhere people who would disagree with this view and

claim that pete is a genius, well his body of work really doesn't speak

very loudly.At least Kurt Cobain tried to pretend he wasn't a drug addict!



What do you reckon? obviously there will be people who love him and will disagree with this view; if so please don't be offensive it's only an opinion which we are all entitled to.

Being a pseud, I saw him on an Artsworld poetry programme reciting lyrics in some bar waving a glass of guiness around. What a cliche. The funniest bit was when he said:



"I love words. Words can express....oooh all sorts."



Then he summoned up all his angst, and smashed his pint of guinness on the bar. Made himself look a right fool. The trouble with addicts who stick around is people get bored with them. Like poets, no one likes a live one.
