Most people agaisnt this are so for religious reasons. What kind of sick fuck of a god would rather have you wither away and suffer great pain, instead of ending it with some dignity when you know you are terminal?

I was so pissed as I sat for hours in my dad's room waiting for him to die from terminal cancer. What kind of sick fuck society we live in that we allow this? He didn't eat for months, was choking on "terminal secretions" and was nothing but bones. Why can't we just let people go to sleep, with no pain? It's absolutely disgusting, and I can't believe religiosu people that claim to be so good and their god such a loving being, would be against assisted suicide.

And please, don't give me BS slippery slope arguements about what could potentially happen if it was legal.

You don't know either way what would happen, were it legalised. Yes, it's devastating. I watched my grandfather go through something similar: it took him months to die, and really everyone in our family knew that the sooner his suffering ended, the better.

But unfortunately, not all people are so unselfish in their reasons for wanting another person to die. You clearly wanted your dad's pain to end: other people could use a legalisation for much more sinister ends. I simply don't know if it's worth the risk to lessen some people's pain (horrible as it is), but potentially open the floodgates for people who didn't want to die, to be subjected to what would effectively be murder, by more unscrupulous people than yourself.

both of my grandparents died last year from cancer. i think they were very fortunate, that they didn't suffer from any pain you discribed. i'm sorry to hear that about your dad. i'm with chris on this, don't assume all religious folks are against it.

I'm with Chris too. I am surprised that noone has brought up unhonored DNR's. My stepdad's mom was kept alive in hospital even though she had a do not recussitate order in place and a hospital attourney in fact in place, they kept recussitating her. Once her medical insurance ran out, then they honored the requests and she passed.

I'm sorry about your dad. That's tough. My cousin's wife is currently going through that with her mom, and I can certainly understand the desire to just ease that suffering.

You shouldn't assume that all religious people are against it.

I didn't, why do religious people always think if anybody says anything about religion, they are meaning all. I said most that are against it are so for religious purposes. I didnt' say all religious people are against assisted suicide.

It's not about ME, its about the person that is dying. THey should have the choice. I don't think my dad would choose to go, but peopel should have the choice. He hung on as much as possible, and wanted it that way.

Sorry, I can't stand the slippery slope arguement, because every single bit of progress people could potentially misuse. Should we not ever progress because of a the minority. That's nonsense IMO

Maybe you're right. IMO, not all progress is a matter of life and death. I'm on the fence with this one... I don't think it'd be very Christian of me to presume I could tell someone who was dying "no, you should carry on suffering", but at the same time I can't help being worried that people could abuse this.

There is a big difference between assisting and letting a person simply die. They shouldn't get mixed together. In the first one you are asking a doctor to in effect kill you and in the other you are asking that the doctor let you die in nature's time, without taking any extraordinary measures. The first is illegal in most states, the latter is not.

I think we should have the right to kill ourseleves if we are in too much pain and there is no hope of recovery. I am not sure that anyone else should be able to make this decision. I sure as hell wouldn't want my mom having the right to say I should die or anyone else for that matter.
