I am doing a seminar and I am speaking on a panel this weekend in San Diego.

I hire camera people for my films mostly so I do not have the answers that I should.

    So asking for help.

What is a good video camera on the low end and then high end?

What is a good high def camera to be using right now and why?

Last but not least, Im gonna be doing alot of camera work myself as I am going to be traveling internationally and doing a lot of shooting. What is a small easy to use but good camera for me to purchase?

I appreciate any and all answers.

I have been in the biz for 15 years Ive got the rest covered :)

I am also doing other research other places but thought it is a filmakers group and perhaps there would be some good advice and I am sure someone will pop up with something good soon.

    Brittany -

There are a lot of variables to consider when it comes to digital cameras. Generally I have not been a fan of HDV cameras and would recommend staying away from them, except perhaps for personal use.

The lowest end DV cameras that I would recommend would be the Canon GL2 or Sony PD150.

Middle ground - and my highest recomendation for DV - Canon XL2 and Panasonic DVX100b

High ground would be the Panasonic AG-HVX200 - but only recording to P2 cards (or portable harddrive) NOT DV tape. This is a great camera for resolution and image quality and as you're shooting directly to drive, there is no significant compression on the image and it's easy to incorporate into the high-end editing software such as Final Cut Pro. It's relatively small and relatively inexpensive (about $10, 000 all told) for a "true" HD camera.

The best for running around yourself and shooting, and still getting the best image, would be the Panasonic DVX100b - small, flip out screen, great image, good lens, 24p capabilities. Good all around.

    Hope that helps a bit.

    All the best,

You're a porn star, so I'm sure you've got money. I'd say get a Panasonic Varicam. It's not as expensive as a CineAlta or Genesis, and it is much nicer than any of the HDV cameras. The Varicam can do all sorts of neat tricks like slow motion and custom color matrices, though, you'd be limited to 720P(more than enough if you don't plan on projecting).

But, if you're looking for a good all around camera that you can take anywhere, the DVX100a and DVX100b are good choices, if you have a little more cash, you can get an HVX200. These cameras are great because they are lightweight, easy to learn and use, and they're a lot better balanced than the Canon XL-2 which is front heavy because of its ginormous lens.

Why not ask your film crew? Their the ones getting boners filming you...sure they got loads of recommendations.

Here is a review with the latest Sony, Panasonic, and Canon HDV cams. One of these three should do well...http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/shoot3/

just cut and paster in your browser

he also travels a lot -- needed somethinh small yet able to produce high quality

forget the HD cameras, not worth it right now -- trust me

    back to that camera...

the camera has 3ccd -- a must for your kind of filmaking

if you can get the 400 model, which is even better, then you are all set

i used it many times --- so very good ... wow

the camera is discontinued cause people were buying it rather than the higher priced ones which were in reality inferior

but many local stores still have them

watch out for expresscameras.com -- had bad experience with them on more than 1 ocassion -- buy from another source -- leave them for last if you cant find it anywhere else

    good luck in your projects

    and please.....

keep the freedom of expression alive!!!
