As part of the Hirshhorn's Directions series, Task, a performance organized by New York-based artist Oliver Herring (b. 1964, Heidelberg, Germany), explores how a diverse group of people can create a community over a day-long period by generating and implementing simple, visually oriented tasks. Task has also taken place in London and Paris. Using everyday props such as paper, pens, tables, chairs, books and cds, 60 Washington-area residents-from varied backgrounds and ranging in age from teens to seniors-will perform. Visitors to the Hirshhorn and National Mall can experience this unique art-making event that breaks down social barriers and inspires individual creativity.

    o Noon to 7 p.m., Task, a performance on the Hirshhorn's Plaza

o 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., discussion in Ring Auditorium with artist, participants and curator. Seating in the Auditorium is limited. Free tickets distributed on a first-come basis starting at 6:30 p.m.

o 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., reception in the lobby and on the Hirshhorn's Plaza

Directions-Oliver Herring also includes video works from his Basic series, on view in the lower level galleries from March 30-July 2. Task is the first Artists at Work program; an ongoing effort to bring visitors together with artists to offer a window into the artistic process that is the result of a partnership between The George Washington University and the Hirshhorn. Herring will visit graduate studios and discuss his work with students at the university. Directions-Oliver Herring is made possible in part by Ray Graham III, Trellis Fund and the Department of Fine Arts and Art History, The George Washington University.
