I don't think people think of negative stereotypes when they see a muslim person. I think they generate the negative thoughts when they see the women who wear the veils that completely cover their face. Subconciously it sets off panic alarms because they are more obvious than the muslim people that try to fit in, and now extreme Muslims scare Americans because we think they have TNT strapped to their chest. Honestly, though, why leave another country to escape oppression but then continue to cover your face? I kind of agree with the comment above me that these artists want to make Americans realize that Muslim women are not all hiding behind a mask, but the truth is a great many of them still do. Therefore, it's not really a stereotype. It's kind of the truth.

Well a lot of them are not hiding behind there veils. It is a culture and religious practice. Here is a the rational of reasons why women where a veil or to be in Niqab:

The niqāb is regarded differently by the various schools of Islamic jurisprudence known as madhāhab. Some see it as obligatory, or fard , while others see it as recommended, or mustahab. The majority of scholars believe only hijab is required; others see niqāb as required. However, some Muslims believe that those who wear the niqab will be rewarded, even if it is not required, because they are following the example of the Prophet Muhammed's female family members.

The rationale of the niqāb comes from the Qur'an and Hadith. It was known that the wives of Mohammed covered their faces whenever around men they did not know, and proponents of the niqāb claim that this means it is a requirement for all women. The Qu'ran says "Oh Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies. That will be better, that they should be known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed." The Qur'an makes a few statements about women covering themselves. The reasons for the niqab are to keep Muslim women from worrying about their appearances and to conceal their beauty. Muslim girls are advised to wear the niqab starting at puberty.

Wow you talk alot about things that have nothing to do with what people say. -_- and you get your info from Wikipedia. If I were a professor you would fail. And once again I agree that stereotypes aren't "stereotypes" if the person really DOES it. That's what we are talking about here. They want to combat the stereotype that Muslim women wear veils, but as you so plainly put, there are women who do wear veils....

Pfft. Oh gosh, yet another religious institution peddling itself for more believers (and finances)

Nahh...I think I'll pass. Besides, there are some things about Islam that people should know...

    1. Call to prayer: Loudspeakers....5 times a day. This isn't bad for some...but if you happen to live right next to one of these PA speakers....damn its annoying. There's nothing like being blared out of a perfectly good sleep in the wee hours of the morning, or being awoken right as you're falling asleep at night. I had the misfortune of taking a room for rent in Kuwait City where I was right next to one of these suckers. I didn't get much sleep during that period of time.

    2. Interaction: At least in church....hey, I can sing, check out the cute ladies in their Sunday best, and sure, the sermons are dull, but at least they hold off on those until the END of the service. Can't say the same about Islam or the mosques.

    3. The physical act of praying. OK< let's say you've got your carpet, you're lined up, and you're praying. And, the person in front of you not only has smelly ass feet...but he shits his pants (or cuts a raunchy fart) while praying.

Where do you go? What do you do? You're trapped there. And, what's worse is if the smell's really foul, you have to put your nose right in there....over, and over, and over...

Nah, Islam ain't for me. Theological discourse aside, it just seems like a rather dull affair.

    Just sayin'
Pleased to meet you...Hope you guessed my name.

I aplogise if there if I misunderstood something you said. Let me recap what I took your comments as.

<subconciously it sets off panic alarms because they are more obvious than the muslim people THAT TRYS TO FIT IN and now extreme Muslims scare Americans because we think they have TNT strapped to their chest. >

I do agree with your point that a muslim/arab person that dresses to there culture does scare Americans. However I disagree that people should fit in for just fitting in. I do not think they are weak whether they wear or do not wear a veil. My article I posted is the rational of why Muslim/Arab women wear the veil which would, rebutes the sterotype that Muslim/Arab women wear it just 'cause they are weak. Which also supports why they feel like they should wear it in America and they do not need to "fit in". Regardless if they break the veil or not they could still be very strong people. You just don't know.

Nice comments 'bout the professor thing...I did not know we were in school here, but I guarantee that I just got an A...JK.

Maybe they wear a veil because there ugly or ashamed. After all don't most middle eastern men consider a camel more valuable than a woman.

2 camels and a goat for those 5 women, no no no my friend, 1 camel and 2 goats...

Hey man you are really brave and cool for those comments. This is an example of a person who's ignorance reeks of B.S. Hopefully you could learn a little bit one of these days!!

I have no desire to learn about or understand there religion, culture or whatever.
Just as they could care less about my religion or culture or whatever.
As long as this country is at war with those that are fanatic about Islam, expect no sympathy, understanding, caring or support from this American.

Maybe your one of those millions of people blinded by that diversity bullshit.
Thinking that if you degrade who you are(American,if you are) or the culture of the country where you live(America)by embracing another's culture or beliefs somehow makes you a better person.

Just who are you trying to impress? The rest of the liberal crowd.

However seeing that you post from Ohio, I will assume that your just curious about understanding how a religion, Islam, can be so brutal as to accept killing another human being for being a non believer or one who might not respect it as some might think it should be.

After all in todays world of being so politically correct and diverse, I can see how ones interest might be sparked by the practices of a existing religion in todays world that killing of non-believers is accepted AND practiced. After all most of the other religions stopped that practice centuries ago.

You making your intial comments and then ranting on 'bout whatever you just did which by the way all your point are absolutely ridicioulous. That is fine that you do not care for our culture, I could careless. Your comments were not needed. I did not mean you have to learn Muslim/Arab culture, but learn to be a responsible adult. However I see that you assume a lot 'bout me so let me shed some light to you.

I am Middle Eastern, The culture you slander is my culture. I am not orginally from OH, but NJ whatever that has to do with it. I am in the military and I have been to Iraq and Qatar. It is my responsiblity to know 'bout the people I am fighting for and against. In my job we would call a behavior pattern a clue, it helps do our job better and keep our people safer.

Do what you feel like you gotta do man, if that makes you feel good than by all means go for it.

Actually, most Arab dress, for males and females, derives from being a desert people where exposure to the sun can be very hazardous. In WWI, the Arabs thought that the British were irrational for wearing short sleeves and short pants exposing their skin to the sun. The keffiyeh and the hijab were essential wear for men and women for protection against the sun. Only later did they become customary. I remember a Saudi businesswoman in Jeddah explaining this.
Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

What did I say that slandered your culture? Is it not true that a religion that will allow killing of non-believers or infidels is not considered brutal or that it is being practiced today. It's fact. And with you in the Military I'm sure you have witnessed it. So you must be referring to the veil/camel joke crack, I'm sure you've heard worse.BTW it was used as a bit of humor on a very dark subject.

You should laugh about it and not take it so seriously.

In fact a black dude told it to me, guess i could have gotten all upset about it and kicked his ass, but instead I replyed with the standby about the 2 kids ,one white and one black, when the black kid said to the white one"my daddys got a new car and it's horn goes honky, honky" and the white kid replys " well my daddys got a new chainsaw and it goes run nigga nigga run.

No big deal we both laughed about it, neither one of us considered those jokes a slander on our cultures. in fact it eased tensions between us.
